The vision of George Mitchell was to create 1.5 jobs per household in The Woodlands. At the time, the concept of a totally integrated hometown was new and unique. The master planned community was located 27 miles north of downtown Houston, amongst a forest, with no nearby employment or shopping. A Grand Opening ribbon was cut that special morning by George’s wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell.
